The process of impregnation, or treating the net with insecticide (ITN), is detailed below:
1. Collect Instruments and Supplies
Gather the following items:
- Mosquito net
- Recommended insecticide (e.g., Permethrin or deltamethrin)
- Gloves
- Measuring container
- Basin or large plastic bag
- Soap
2. Preparation
The mosquito net must be washed and dried properly beforehand to ensure it is clean.
3. Mix the Solution
- Measure the required amount of water:
- About 0.5 liters for a synthetic net.
- About 2 liters for a cotton net.
- Add one pre-measured dose of insecticide from the bottle to the water, following the package or manufacturer’s instructions.
Mix the solution thoroughly with a gloved hand.
4. Soak the Net
- While wearing gloves, fully immerse the net in the basin or plastic bag containing the insecticide solution.
Ensure all parts of the net are soaked and impregnated for several minutes.
5. Remove and Wring
- Gently lift the net out, allowing the excess liquid to drip back into the basin.
Do not wring too hard, as this will remove the insecticide from the fibers.
6. Dry the Net
- Spread the net flat on a plastic sheet in the shade to dry.
- Do not dry in direct sunlight, as this degrades the insecticide’s efficacy.
- Hang the net to finish drying if needed.
These steps will produce an Insecticide-Treated Mosquito Net (ITN) that is effective for mosquito protection for six (several) months, depending on usage and washing frequency.
